5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Quitting Your Job

Updated: Jun 10, 2020

Have you been going back and forth on the pro's and con's of your current job? Looking for joy in a job that doesn't appreciate you gets a loud BYE!

SANITY OVER SALARY

I have spent the last two years moving from Champaign, Illinois. to Orlando, Florida. to Denver, Colorado. and I can officially say I feel like I'm home. One of the hardest parts about moving you ask? Finding a consistent job that I enjoy. Because we have moved around so much, I have found myself just jumping into a job. Reason being, if I don't have the money coming in to support my bad habits (shopping, a donut I don't actually need, traveling on MY time), it's hard for me to accept relying on my partner.

NOT MY STYLE. I'm a do it myself kinda gal.

When we moved to Colorado, I found myself jumping into a job just to get a paycheck. Although it may sound like the semi-responsible thing to do, I was incredibly unhappy. Working for an asshole Doctor in the Plastic Surgery industry is always a toss-up.

HOW DID I GET INTO THIS FIELD?

It started back in Illinois when I was asked to consider a position for a Doctor in Champaign - He's Bomb by the way - without hesitation I took it. I've always had a love for fashion, beauty and being a little excessive with skin care so it was a no brainer. After working there a little over two years, I met Jeremy, my boyfriend, put in my notice and moved to Florida.

When we arrived in Orlando, I had one thing on my mind: FIND A JOB.

Because the population in Orlando is largely hispanic, it was important that I actually take those Spanish High School courses seriously in order to get a job....I did the opposite of that. So I had a fun job that paid for the groceries and toilet paper. I was literally wiping my ass with the only money I made. It was humbling to say the least.

AND NOW I AM HERE IN DENVER

Writing this blog because yet again, I found myself in a position where I was working for someone that did not care about me but rather bent me over due to my talents and capabilities for performing many tasks. Really it was my fault, I should have played dumb.

5 QUESTIONS I ASKED MYSELF BEFORE QUITTING

1. Am I being dramatic or is it really that bad?

Pretty sure I asked Jeremy and my dad this more than I asked myself. The reality of it is, have you put up with a lot more shit from your superiors than you were to do as stated in your offer letter? If yes, RUN! If they did not even give you an offer letter, chances are they're worse than you even realize.

2. When you said yes to this job, what were your known duties?

Did they say "x,y, and z needs to be done, anything further and we will talk additional compensation)? Yeah, same. Most of the time employers say this to make you feel they are actually taking care of you. They just want to bullshit you through the front door because they see the potential impact you can have on their business - in a positive way, of course.

3. How many additional jobs have you been given without additional pay?

This one ERKS me. IT'S THE LAST STRAW in my book. You don't take advantage of me unless you pay me for it. I'll do extra work until the cows come home, but I better see the return for my sanity on my paycheck in two weeks. Is the additional work small tasks? Or, are they a whole other position or positions? I love me a debatable topic.

4. Do you have sheep dreams or evil stapler dreams at night?

If you wake up in a panic because you're not sure if you fully did everything at work the day before, chances are your boss has put WAY TOO MUCH pressure on you over a bullshit job. Did you know #Amazon is hiring? You can make $18/hr to drive a van. How's that for sanity?

5. Does your employers integrity match yours?

Tricky-Ricky with this one. How many times have you worked for someone that cheats the system any chance they get? Does it make you feel as though you are compromising your morals and ethics based on the decisions being made for you? If yes, then why are you still there? I have recently learned that I'm only as good as I treat myself. Walking on eggshells is not my jam. Too crunchy and at times it can hurt. I like a good boujee pump to get me through the day, if your style of work is not accepted or appreciated, why force it...just leave.

If you feel the shade coming from your home away from home, chances are you need to build a new foundation. Life is WAY TOO SHORT to deal with unnecessary manipulation daily.” - me

At the end of the day, do what makes you happy. You have one shot at this crapshoot called life. You either work for the man, or you be the man. All I know is that when I exit this life, ya'll best believe I'm going out like Amanda Bynes, cause She's The Man.
